| Der Tunnel durchbohrt die Wasserscheide zwischen dem Schwarzen Meer und der Adria; der Durchschlag erfolgte am 31. Mai 1904. Er steigt auf 3.561 Meter Länge mit 23 Promille und fällt dann auf zunächst 213 Meter mit 2 Promille, danach auf der verbleibenden Strecke von 2.565 Metern mit 10 Promille. Er wird von etwa 1.000 Metern Gebirge überlagert. Der Tunnel ist, ebenso wie die anderen großen Tunnel der neuen Alpenbahnen, zweigleisig hergestellt, während die Bahn selbst nur eingleisig angelegt ist. Er hat eine lichte Weite von 8,20 Meter und eine lichte Höhe von 6,40 Meter.
